How to rank higher on Google Maps, and what Google lets a tradesman do

Four questions come up again and again once a tradesman has a Business Profile: how to rank higher on Google Maps, whether Google punishes fake reviews, whether a home address can be hidden, and whether a profile needs a website. This guide answers all four from Google's own published rules, with the page and the date we read it beside every claim.

The short answer

Google ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance and prominence. Fake reviews are removed and can cost the account behind them its privileges. A home address can come off the profile entirely. And a website is not required to be listed, though it helps prominence.

How do I rank higher on Google Maps?

Start with the three factors in Google's own words. Relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for". Distance is "how far each business is from the customer who's searching", and if a customer does not share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location. Prominence means "how well known a business is", and Google adds that it is also based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. Two more lines are worth acting on. Google states that "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results", and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. One shortcut that backfires: the business name

Do not add your trade or your town to the business name to rank for it. Google's guidelines say your name should reflect your business's real world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery, and that including unnecessary information in the name is not permitted. The disallowed elements it lists include phone numbers, website addresses and fully capitalised words. Extra details in a name can lead to suspension. Does Google punish fake reviews?

Yes. Google's policy states that fake engagement is not allowed and will be removed, and its examples include reviews or ratings that have been paid for, directly or in kind, and content posted from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person. Google also says that where behaviour harms users, the community or businesses, it may take action ranging from suspending account privileges to account termination. The policy page we read does not set out a separate penalty for a Business Profile, so we will not claim one. What it does settle is the practical point: a review you paid for, wrote yourself under another name, or had a friend post will be taken down, and the account behind it is at risk. Can I hide my home address on my profile?

Yes. Google does not use the word hide, but its instruction is clear: if you do not serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile. Its guidelines for service area businesses say the same thing, that you should hide your business address from customers, and that a service area business should have one profile with a designated service area. You can set up to 20 service areas based on cities, postal codes or other areas you serve, and the boundaries of the whole area should not be more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based. One exception matters: Google says hybrid businesses can show their storefront address, so a trade with a real shop counter that customers visit can keep it. Can I have a Business Profile without a website?

Yes. Google's guidelines ask a business to provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location, or a website that represents it. Either one satisfies the requirement, so a phone number alone is enough to be listed. That is not the same as being found. Google says prominence is partly based on how many websites link to your business, which a profile with no website of its own struggles to build. In our own check of 3,589 London trade businesses, 16.4% had no website listed at all, so a simple, fast site is still a way to stand apart from one in six of your competitors. None of this needs a specialist, only an afternoon and a bit of discipline: the right category, every field filled in, an honest service area and an even handed way of asking for reviews. If you would rather it was done for you, that is what GOOGLE ON does, and we will walk you through the three steps only you can complete.
